WARNING: Eating Christmas pudding while pregnant may seriously damage your teeth!

Christmas Pudding grade sterling silver threepences from 50p.

For some reason, it has long been a tradition in the United Kingdom (and quite possibly other parts of the world) to place a silver threepence coin in the annual Christmas pudding mix. The result of this is shown above.

This practice was once very popular indeed, but nowadays, what with health and safety worries, the fact that they don't make silver threepences anymore and obvious well founded dental concerns, this tradition is practiced less frequently. Although last Christmas I did sell at least 10 threepences that I know for a fact were all destined to be put in Christmas puddings, and it's quite likely more were sold for this purpose without their destinies being revealed to me!

I have hundreds of silver threepences that are not of good enough quality to appear on the main threepences for sale page, they have a small value because they are made of silver, so I thought in order to sell these charming little silver coins I would offer them as 'Christmas Pudding grade', which is a new numismatic grade invented by me, for the use of describing threepences in less than collectable condition.

The Silver threepences available are shown below, and are: Top Left - Victorian young head threepence, issued 1838 - 1887. Top Right - Jubilee head Victorian threepence, issued 1887 - 1893. Middle left - Old or veiled head Victorian threepence, issued 1893 - 1901. Middle right - Edward VII Threepence, issued 1902 - 1910. Bottom left - George V threepence, issued of sterling silver 1911 - 1919 (and then .500 silver after). Bottom right - The common reverse of all types of the threepence' shown.

Quantities of all of the 5 types shown above are available. All will be in circulated conditions and will not be clean! Unless you specify a date I will select a date a random, but I really don't mind having a look for any special dates you may desire.

Prices are as follows:

Young head Victoria 1838 - 1887 (most are dated 1850's - 1880's)  £1.50 (when available)
Jubilee head Victoria 1887 - 1893 £1.20
Veiled head Victoria 1893 - 1901 £1.00
Edward VII 1902 -1910 80p
George V 1911 - 1919 50p
One of each (5 coins) £4.50

WARNING: Christmas Puddings can damage your teeth, and the teeth of those around you.

Disclaimer: I do not accept responsibility for dental problems or any problems caused by swallowing these threepences. I do not recommend placing solid silver items in any kind of food. 'Christmas pudding grade' simply means that they are too worn to be used for much else. However, if you do intend to put them in a pudding mix, please warn your dinner guests that there may be a small silver coin in their dessert, so they can search their bowls first!

For your information:  Sterling silver is a silver alloy that is 92.5% pure silver. Modern 16mm (5/8th of an inch) sterling threepences were produced from the re-coinage of George III in 1817 until the silver content was reduced to 50% in 1920. Coins dated before the reign of Queen Victoria (1837 - 1901) are not common in worn conditions as they did not circulate in large numbers and usually were part of special Maundy sets issued by the monarch.
